Winning Free-tique titles, Vote for your Faves!

UPDATE: The title for the book has been decided. It is….THE GREAT CALL OF CHINA. Thanks to everyone who participated in the contest.  With over 500 entries, it was a stunning success.  Snoop and I hope you had a great time playing.

Here are the results (well, most of the results)…

I’m not sure when the final title for the book will be decided (that decision lies with the publisher) so I’ll announce it on my website and to the winner personally when I know–hopefully soon! In the meanwhile, here are the new titles I received that I’ve forwarded on (in no particular order)…Please vote for your favorites!
TITLES THAT WON A HALF-PAGE TIQUE

  • SWEET AND SOUR SUMMER
  • HOT-POT LUCK
  • THE ORIENT SUCCESS
  • WEST MEETS EAST
  • THE MIA DYNASTY (if character was named Mia)
  • JADE IN CHINA (if character was named Jade)
  • PEKING LUCK
  • GIRLS JUST WANNA HAVE FENG SHUI

If one or more of the above titles is yours, email me the first half-page (double-spaced) of your children’s fiction manuscript to snoop at cynthealiu dot com. PLEASE PASTE YOUR WORK INTO YOUR EMAIL. Remember, this half-page should represent the first thing an editor or agent would see when you make a submission. In the subject line of your email, tell me what type of work it is (PB, ER, CB, MG, or YA), provide MS TITLE, and word count of entire work. Also include the winning title(s) in the body of your email. Please give me at least a week to return your tiques; I’m pretty swamped these days but will try to get to it ASAP!

Please note: there were a few titles that were already under consideration before the contest. These titles are not eligible to receive a prize because we already have them. But in case you were wondering what they were, they are…

  • MADE IN CHINA*
  • GREAT CALL OF CHINA*
  • CHINA DOLL*

*Sorry, guys, but I still hope you had fun exercising your *noodle* for the contest.

Finally, I wanted to list the titles that were totally inappropriate but worth a mention for your reading pleasure.

  • IT’S ALL CHINESE TO ME
  • THAT’S THE WAY I EGG ROLL
  • IF THE SHU FITS
  • A GOOD MEIN IS HARD TO FIND
  • BLOOD IS THICKER THAN SOY SAUCE
  • LONG TIME NO CHI
  • CHINEASY COME, CHINEASY GO
  • YOU DIM SUM, YOU LOSE SOME
  • IS THERE MSG IN MY DNA?
  • WHERE THERE’S A YIN, THERE’S A YANG
  • FOR WHOM THE EGG ROLLS

You all are too funny! Thanks for participating, and feel free to congratulate the winners and put in your vote for your favorites by commenting here.

Happy titling,

Cynthea and Snoop

  1. OMG! I can’t believe you liked “Girls Just Wanna Have Feng Shui”! I almost didn’t submit that one! I’m thrilled “Jade in China” and “The Orient Success” made it into the final round, too. This was a really fun contest! Thank you so much, Cynthea!

(I love “For Whom the Egg Rolls” and “Long Time No Chi”!)

  2. Mine is “West Meets East,” but I love “Sweet and Sour Summer.” Maybe it’s because I’m a huge fan of sweet and sour shrimp. 🙂

  3. I submitted THE KIM DYNASTY. Did you change the name or was that another submission? If it’s someone else’s… DARN, I WAS SO CLOSE!!! That was fun. Thanks for including everyone.

  4. I was You Dim Sum You Lose Some!

I had so much fun brainstorming. I jotted down ideas as I watched Anthony Bordein (sp?) in Singapore.

If you ever need an idea generator again, I’d be happy to do it — no prize required.

  5. It was so much fun – even though I didn’t make the final cut. I thought it was hilarious and I REALLY like the Great Call of China

  6. This contest was a blast! Mine was Peking Luck, after one of my favorite foods. I’m thrilled it made the final round!

I love The Great Call of China – looking forward to reading it!

  7. Hmm…was there more than one submission for West Meets East — I was pretty sure my friend and I brainstormed that one, too! You didn’t go for our personal fave: Unfortunate Cookie (or Fortunate Cookie (with main character, Cookie!))

    1. I got WEST MEETS EAST twice. So both of you won a half-page tique. Snoop decided that Fortune Cookie puns would not count since technically they were invented in the States. So picky!
